Michael Grear Surveys was excited to be part of the Althorpe Island Lighthouse survey to assist with the ongoing maintenance of this critical piece of navigational infrastructure.
The small Island just south of Marion Bay on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia is only safely accessible by helicopter and has a dedicated helicopter pad adjacent the lighthouse.
Our role was to provide a survey accurate full colour Terrestrial Laser Scan point cloud of both the inside and outside of the lighthouse. This point cloud was then to be used to design upgrades and improvements for the lighthouse.
With only one day allocated for the survey, an early start at Marion Bay (approx. 3.5 hrs drive from Adelaide) was required. It was then a short helicopter ride to the Island.
All the survey works were completed, including a pegging of an existing lease boundary on site, by the time the helicopter had to make its return. A successful project for us and the client.
